DAY 1 (Saturday, 16 Nov 2019) Hong Kong to Laozhai (老寨)

Arrival

At the start of the day, Discovery College students and faculty will travel from Hong Kong to Laozhai Village. Upon arrival, students and faculty will be led by service provider in icebreakers,team building exercises and a comprehensive safety orientation. A traditional family style dinner will be served in the village. After dinner, our group will discuss the next day’s program itinerary and objectives.

DAY 2 (Sunday, 17 Nov 2019) Laozhai (老寨)

Introduction through Survey, Exploration, and Adventure

Student groups will be provided with a map and list of people and places to visit throughout the day. These activities may include personal interviews, group interviews, activity workshops, and area tours. The group will convene for lunch in the village. Facilitators will provide guidance as students frame their questions and reflections on the Design Challenge.

AM: Community mapping activity

Students are paired into groups and directed to explore the surrounding community while mapping structures, roads, and points of interest. Groups will come back together at the end of the activity and share their results.

NOON: Hike and lunch at the top of rice terraces

PM: Adventure Race

In their groups, students will be provided with a map of several locations throughout the village. At each location, students must solve a puzzle or perform a task. The first group to successfully complete each location’s challenge wins.

EVE: Design Thinking Workshop Empathy

Service provider will facilitate a workshop which will focus on developing the skills, techniques, and mindsets necessary for developing empathy. Emphasis will be placed on observation techniques and overcoming language/cultural barriers.

DAY 3 (Monday, 18 Nov 2019) Laozhai (老寨)

Inspiration through Immersion, Interviews, and Active Participation

During the first stage of our program, students will find inspiration through immersion in the rural lifestyle of the village. Student groups will be provided with a map and list of people and places to visit throughout the day. These activities may include personal interviews, group interviews, activity workshops, and area tours. The group will convene for lunch in the village. Facilitators will provide guidance as students frame their questions and reflections on the Design Challenge.

AM: Breakout Activities

Students will engage with community members in activities such as tofu making, straw sandal making, Fishing, Rice Husking, etc. During these activities, students will be directed to observe and communicate with the local villagers, gathering information regarding the needs of the village

PM: Story Creation and Sharing

Students will work in their groups to create a short story about the community. Groups will share their stories and their findings with each other, reflecting on their observations.

EVE: Design Thinking Workshop Define

Service provider will facilitate a workshop focusing on the development of each group’s “How Might We (HMW)” statement. This statement identifies an area of improvement within the community and provides a starting point for creating sustainable solutions.

Movie Screening

Our group will gather together with local community members to watch a Chinese/American film.

DAY 4 (Tuesday, 19 Nov 2019) Laozhai (老寨)

Ideation through Reflection, Cooperation and Design Principles

During the second stage of our design challenge, students and community members will come together to share and reflect on the various needs of the community. Students will use feedback to refine and clarify their Point of View and/or How Might We statements in order to define the problem. In the afternoon, we’ll return to a shared space and begin brainstorming radical ideas how to solve our design challenge. Facilitators and local experts will be present throughout this time to provide support and guidance for students.

AM: Breakout Activities

Students will engage with community members in activities such as tofu making, straw sandal making, Fishing, Rice Husking, etc. During these activities, students will be directed to observe and communicate with the local villagers, gathering information regarding the needs of the village

PM: POV/HMW Reflection with community

Students will take their POV and HMW statements to the local community members and reflect upon their accuracy and efficacy.

Design Thinking Workshop Ideate

The service provider will facilitate a Design Thinking (DT) workshop which focuses on brainstorming and creating radical solutions to the community’s problems.

EVE: Star Gazing

Looking up at the stars, we’ll revisit the past with local community members as they share stories about their past and growing up in Laozhai.

DAY 5 (Wednesday, 20 Nov 2019) Laozhai (老寨)

Presentation of Final Design Concepts through Prototyping and Refinement

During the third stage of our program in Laozhai, students and faculty will finalize their design concepts and share their ideas with the local community through the use of prototyping. Students will refine their ideas throughout the day and share them at the end of the evening.

Students will engage with community members in activities such as tofu making, straw sandal making, Fishing, Rice Husking, etc. During these activities, students will be directed to observe and communicate with the local villagers, gathering information regarding the needs of the village

PM: Prototype

Students will take their ideas to the local community and gather feedback and information which they will use to then iterate and refine.

EVE: Presentation

Before dinner, student groups will take turns presenting their ideas to the local

community.

Farewell Dinner

Students, facilitators, and local community members will come together one last time for a farewell dinner.

DAY 6 (Thurday, 21 Nov 2019) Laozhai (老寨) Laozhai to Guilin 

Reflections on the Laozhai Village Design Challenge

Students will spend the morning saying goodbye to the local community members and newfound friends of Laozhai village. After breakfast and meetings, our group will depart for Guilin city and Hong Kong.

AM: Hike to Xinzhai Village and Waterfall

Our group will hike the 8-kilometer loop from Laozhai, down the valley, through Xinzhai village, under the waterfall, and around the rice terraces.

Farewell lunch with the community

PM: Travel from Laozhai to Guilin

Group dinner followed by walking tour of downtown Guilin

Explore the city’s famous “Two Rivers, Four Lakes” scenic area, including dynasty era gardens, bridges, and pagodas.

DAY 7 (Friday, 22Nov 2019) – Laozhai (老寨) – Guilin to Hong Kong
