Supplemental essay update from Johns Hopkins

Johns Hopkins University Undergraduate Admissions

With applications going live, we want to introduce our new supplemental essay question:

“Founded on a spirit of exploration and discovery, Johns Hopkins University encourages students to share their perspectives, develop their interests and pursue new experiences. Use this space to share something you’d like the admissions committee to know about you (your interests, your background, your identity or your community) and how it has shaped what you want to get out of your college experience at Hopkins. (300-400 words)”

This is a space for students to share more about their personal context, unique experiences, and perspectives. We wanted to leave it open to give them the freedom to share what’s most important to them.

Essay Writing Resources

We also wanted to provide a few resources to support you as you advise your students on their application essay over the next several months:

  • Check out our Virtual Essay Writing Workshops, happening through the fall.
  • Our Essays that Worked page provides examples of essays that “worked” with notes from our admissions committee about what made the essay stand out.
  • Our College Planning Toolkit was developed to help students, families, and our college counseling partners navigate our admissions process throughout the upcoming year.
