VSA-Oxford Summer Program (Online) August 2020

Welcome to VSA Summer School!

Based in Hong Kong, the VSA Summer School is an academic, activity-based program which embraces IB teaching practices to develop students holistically. The program is managed by Victoria Shanghai Academy (VSA), an IB through train school which has over 1,800 students (www.vsa.edu.hk).

Experiencing an Oxford Education ONLINE

We heard you, you got it! Due to COVID-19, the face to face VSA-Oxford program in Hong Kong was cancelled which was a major disappointment for all parties. After reviewing the nature of online learning and speaking with the academics, we are pleased to announce that four academics from the University of Oxford will be providing the same high quality introductory university level courses online. All of the instructors have received their doctorates or medical degrees from the University of Oxford and have formal full-time teaching research and teaching responsibilities in the university.

The courses will be delivered by Google Meet or Zoom and maybe accompanied with other online tools to mimic the face to face teaching experience as closely as possible.

Dates and Times:

Session 1: Monday 10 August 2020 – Friday 14 August 2020 (4 courses)

Session 2: Monday 17 August 2020 – Friday 21 August 2020 (1 course)

The courses will be delivered from 1700-1900 (Hong Kong Local Time). In order to provide greater flexibility, students who miss ONE of the lessons due to any reasons can watch a recording of it. However, we greatly encourage students to participate in all sessions as debates and in-depth discussions are a critical component of the Oxford education.

Tuition Fee

The Tuition fee for each course is HKD 5,000 per student. The contact time for each course is 10 hours but students will need to do reading and preparation outside of class time to maximise the learning experience during class hours. In Oxford, it is well known that finishing the weekly essay is only the start of the learning experience.

The size of each class would be limited to 12 students.

Is this for me?

These courses are designed for academically inclined secondary school students who are intellectually curious and would like to explore particular discipline more deeply. It is equally suitable for students who have a particular vocation/subject in mind e.g. medicine or law or would like to learn more about different disciplines and how it may look like in university. Due to the academic rigour, it would be most suited for students in Year 10-12 (or Year 11-13 in the British system), although we also consider academically gifted Year 9 students. Check out our FAQ for more information regarding suitability.

Each instructor will provide a course in their respective disciplines where the length of each course is 10 hours each.

Courses for the following subjects will be offered this summer.

  • Medicine
  • Law
  • Engineering
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Politics
  • Public Health

Deadlines

First Round Deadline: Wednesday 25 June 2020

Second Round Deadline: Friday 3 July 2020

The second round of applications may not open should the Summer School decide that there are sufficient number of students attending the program. It is advisable that interested students should apply as soon as possible. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis and payment is required to secure your place. Courses will only run when a minimum number of students have enrolled, failing which the tuition fees will be refunded to course participants.

We look forward to welcoming you to VSA this summer!

Posted by heo

The British Council is delighted to announce that the ‘Study UK: Prepare to Study and Live in the UK’ massive open online course (MOOC) for international students will start from Monday 06 July 2020. This course is specifically designed to give international students a clear understanding of what it’s like to study at a university in the UK, including how courses are structured and assessed, and what to expect when arriving in the UK.

It will be beneficial for your students who are either:

  • Starting UK university courses in autumn 2020.
  • Interested in learning more about UK higher education.
  • Currently studying in the UK and would like to develop their academic skills and knowledge.

The MOOC covers a wide range of topics, including all the essential information (e.g. UK’s teaching methods/formats, coursework assessment, student support) that international students need to prepare for and make the most of their UK study experience. Upon successful completion, students will receive a digital certificate.

There will also be a Facebook Live show at 14:00 BST on 7 July 2020, where students will have the chance to meet the course leaders and ask questions. If your students are interested in attending, they can register for the event at: www.facebook.com/events/564237167650947/

Lastly, please find below the latest news updates regrading studying in the UK this September for your information:

  • UK visa update for international students (news link)

The main amendments that have been announced are: a) confirmation that distance/blended learning will be permitted for the 2020/21 academic year provided students intend to transition to face-to-face learning as soon as circumstances allow, and b) confirmation that those studying by distance/blended learning will be eligible to apply for the Graduate Route provided they are in the UK by 6 April 2021.

  • Most UK universities will teach in-person this autumn (news link)
On 17 June, Universities UK (UUK) published the survey results of UK universities’ plan for Autumn 2020. “97% of universities surveyed confirmed that they will provide in-person teaching at the start of term this year, with 78 universities (87%), also stating that they will offer in-person social opportunities to students, including outside events and sporting activities, all in line with government and public health guidance. “
