Year 6 Blog

Friday 24 August 2018

Dear Parents

Welcome to the first posting of the Year 6 blog for the upcoming academic year 2018 – 2019. On the blog, you will find updates on the life and learning of the students in Year 6 as well as reminders for important dates and information concerning a variety of curriculum areas.

Start of the School Year

It has been great to see the students returning to school ready to learn and full of enthusiasm for their new classes. During the past two weeks, we have been building relationships amongst peers and teachers as well as establishing some routines and expectations.

Who We Are

The first unit of inquiry with which the students will engage is ‘Who we are’, this has the central idea: ‘Understanding who we are as individuals and as a community can help us grow, discover, dream’, and we will inquire into this big idea through two lines of inquiry which are

  • Influences on people’s self-worth
  • How people build and manage relationships to support each other

By the end of this inquiry, the students will have discovered that there will be a range of external factors throughout their lives that will affect their sense of worth and individuality. They will also learn strategies and build resilience in dealing with these in a positive and constructive manner.

Language

In language, the students will be looking to develop writing that allows their reader to understand how a character feels about a topic, event or an issue and they will aim to do this through their choice of words and dialogue. To help support this we will be looking at stories that have a moral and looking at how authors get their feelings and emotions across through in their writing.

Mathematics

We have started the year looking at how important it is to have a growth mindset when learning maths and realising that mistakes are great opportunities from which to learn. We have looked into how mathematicians use BEDMAS to order the solving of problems and will start to look at how patterns are a part of not just maths but also the world around us.

Laptops

Undoubtedly one of the highlights of Year 6 is when the students receive their own laptops. The use of laptops is incorporated across the curriculum and at the moment the apps Padlet and Canva are being used to enhance collaboration and help with design and presentation.  The students are also working through a programme of Digital Citizenship which will be led by Mrs Sercombe and Mr Leithhead.

Homework

Year 6 students will receive homework once a week, where the instructions will be posted on Google Classroom. The work will generally consist of consolidating or practicing knowledge and skills already introduced in class, as well as a weekly reading log. Parents should have received an email about the homework notifications so that you know when it has been set.
