Year 4 have begun their new unit. Our first unit, that focussed on conflict and strategies for resolving conflict, will continue throughout the year. At certain points, such as prior to camp, and as situations arise, we will revisit and continue our inquiry into conflict. In this way, we are hopeful that the students application of the strategies to resolve conflict will develop as the year goes on.
The details of our new unit are as follows:
Theme: How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea: Cultures reveal their beliefs, values and traditions through story
Lines of Inquiry: We are inquiring into…
- What is meant by values and culture
- How people express beliefs and values
- Connections that can be found between the beliefs and values in different cultures
Language: Students will read a variety of stories from different cultures that help them discover how beliefs, values and traditions are expressed. They will also explore the features of these texts and write narratives themselves.
Students will also choose a method of expression to demonstrate their understanding of a cultural story. They will work with different teachers on these projects and present them at the end of the unit. Students will get to choose from: drama, art, dance, music, and a variety of other digital and non-digital methods of story telling.
At the end of the unit we will make these presentations available to you via our blog.
These are the language outcomes for this unit:
Math: Students will focus on addition and subtraction. This includes mental and written strategies as well as strategies for solving word problems involving addition and subtraction.
Students will soon be receiving their Smart Cards. They will need to use these to beep in every morning. They will also be able to use them to take out library books independently. Please help your child find a safe place to keep their Smart Card that will allow them to easily get it out each morning.
If anyone is interested in coming in and working with our LDT teacher to help create vocabulary packs, we would really appreciate it. Please email Mr. Stanhope (email@example.com) if you are able to help.
Next week a letter will go home asking for parents who want to help out on our Year 4 Camp (4-6 November). Please keep an eye out for it.
