Library

The Discovery College Library endeavours to support the students and staff in their pursuit of quality information and leisure reading material. As our school grows, so does our collection and access to information. The Library is staffed by a library manager, a PYP and MYP/DP teacher librarian, as well as library assistants. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see who these people are!

Our opening hours are: 8.00am – 4.30pm on Monday to Thursday and 8.00am – 4.00pm on Friday. Students are able to access the library and borrow books before school, during recess and lunch, after school, and with their classes during the day. We are also usually open during summer so students and their parents can swing by to browse through our collection or borrow some extra books for those long summer days! (It is suggested to call us in advance to make sure that we are open.)

There are a number of different resources arranged in the library to cater for the different age groups we have in the school. More details of this arrangement as well as the library policies can be found in the Parent and Student Handbook. Parents are welcome to register to borrow from the library, and can be issued their own library card after completing a registration form. Parents are asked to come before 8.30am and after 3.00pm to reduce disruption to the students needs.

Donations of books and other resources are also welcome. Please understand that we are selective in what we accept for the collection to maintain a high standard of resources. If you wish to donate, we will take everything, but some donations may be donated to a third party if we cannot use them. Please see our policies for the selection criteria.

Questions about the library can be directed to library@dc.edu.hk, or contact us at (852) 3969-1000.

PYP Teacher Librarian

I originally come from Wales, but I have lived in several countries including Singapore, Venezuela, UK and Hong Kong. I have been teaching for more than 20 years, the majority of which have been in PYP schools. I am a true international educator. I have taught all age groups in the Primary School and especially enjoy being a Teacher Librarian and working with all the students in the Primary years.

I teach children how to research effectively by critically evaluating the many resources, both digital and print, I also promote good children’s literature during visits to the library and organise visiting authors to come to DC and share their stories.

My favourite type of book is a top quality picture book that stimulates thinking, has incredible illustrations with the odd bit of adult humour hidden within.

MYP/DP Teacher Librarian

Hello! I come from Killarney in the beautiful southwest of Ireland. I moved to Hong Kong in August 2011 and live in DB with my family.  I have been working in the library in Discovery College since October 2011.

As MYP/DP teacher librarian I really enjoy working with students and teachers throughout the school, both in the library and in the classroom. My teacher librarian qualifications include a Masters in Library and Information Studies from University College Dublin and a PGCE from the University of Sunderland. I teach information literacy and academic honesty and actively promote reading across all year groups in secondary.

If you ever need a recommendation for a good book, just ask!  I read across a wide variety of genres and some of my favourite authors include Sebastian Faulks, John Marsden and Jodi Picoult.

Library Manager

Before joining Discovery College, I worked as an Assistant Librarian at the German Swiss International School. I graduated from the University of Hong Kong, majoring in Information Management. Reading and travelling are my favourite hobbies. I especially like visiting local libraries during my overseas trips.

I like reading travel literature. The book ‘Stories of the Sahara’ by San Mao (三毛) is my favourite book. Her adventurous experience in the African desert is fascinating.

After born and raised in Hong Kong, I spent my academic years in the States studying Philosophy and Literature with hours invested in the library reading.

Upon returning to my hometown I became a piano teacher and accompanist after furthering my music studies in instrumental teaching and piano pedagogy.  I was privileged to work with children of all ages for the past 20 years before I decided to take on some new challenges and completed a Law degree from London.  I am a proud parent of two lovely children that attend DC while watching the school grow immensely in the past 10 years.

I find curiosity in pursue of many interests including films, music, swimming, dancing, skiing, cooking, gardening, traveling and of course reading, along with my cats and a cup of coffee.  My favorite authors included Shakespeare, Marlowe, and Milan Kundera.

To name a few of my favorite children books  – The Giving Tree, The Little Prince, The Harry Potter series and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Library Assistant

Hi! I’m originally from the United States, but have spent most of my life in the Philippines, only to move to Hong Kong just a few years ago. I work full-time in the Library, but I’m also a part-time student, currently working for my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.

I love working in the library, simply because I’m surrounded by books! The students at DC know me by many different nicknames, including Mr. Niko, Mr. Rico, Mr. Sir, Mr. Donkey, and my personal favorite: Mr. Piggy.

I enjoy reading thriller/suspense novels, and some of my favorite authors include C.S. Lewis, Ted Dekker, and Linwood Barclay.
